The Tournament Once the pledges were in, the 24-Player roster was split into three divisions, and excitment spread like wildfire through the qualifying rounds...
Qualifying Rounds Yellow Division Setting the standard for fundraising, Yellow Division generated nearly 1/3 of all monies, bringing in $975 in pledges collected! At the tables, the four teams were closely matched with 2 wins apiece for Trevor Hockham & Brian Cook, Shauna Beaudoin & Mark Irwin, and the rookie team of Anthony Tuzi & John Gerontzos. Following the preliminaries, it would be Tuzi & Gerontzos taking the top spot, followed closely by Beaudoin & Irwin. Hockham & Cook would earn their continuance in the first of two overall wildcard spots. The real story here would be the fourth team of the division, Steve Kean & tournament coordinator Eric "Snowman" Snow, who took a commanding lead in their first match, only to throw it away by way of a self-imposed hook on the 8-ball by the Snowman. The loss would prove devastating to the pair, who never fully recovered, failing to score even a single win, and becoming the first team eliminated from contention. Making History! Though the elimination would not be the first time that the Snowman has fallen prey to the qualifying rounds, his final score of -1 overall would make Snowman Series history landing him at the bottom of the pack - #24 of 24. Blue Division Competition was no less fierce in Blue Division, though a clear front-runner would emerge. With a record of 3-0 in the preliminaries, first-time shooters John Webster & Joe Chisholm would earn the top spot, guaranteeing their continuance. Giovanni Caicedo & George Apap (both reigning Champions from other Snowman Series events) would also move on, with a 2-1 record and enough points to gain 2nd place in Blue. The female duo of Julia Vamos & Jamie Brewer, returning to the Series following a hiatus of nearly two years, would find themselves short of qualifying, becoming the second team scratched from the roster, while rookies David Delgado & Vince Ojascastro would be left on the fence, awaiting a tie-breaking match to possibly earn a wildcard spot. Red Division Series veterans Dave Stout & Brett Bradley would be forced into the same niche, awaiting a tie-break match with Red Division's Delgado & Ojascastro, after tallying just a single win in the preliminary rounds. Falling short of this fate were 2-time Snowman Series 9-Ball Champion Bobby Kyriazis with rookie partner Jomo Benjamin, who also had a single win, but with too few points to earn a shot at moving on. Instead, previous 8-ball Champions Jeff Ferguson & Bernie Ward would hold top honours for Red, just slightly ahead of first-time shooters Frank Fasani & Melissa Afkari. Tie Breaker Playing a single game to break a tie for the final Wildcard slot would be Delgado & Ojascastro of Blue Division and Stout & Bradley from the Reds. What seemed like a marathon duel came down to a battle for the 8-ball, ultimately ending in favour of Blue Division's Delgado & Ojascastro. |
